The world was taken by storm in January of 2020 after a strange kind of flu emerged from no where.

From the onset, many people including researchers knew little about the origin of the sickness which had flu-like symptoms, but was more lethal than most sicknesses common to the World.

But wait, the fact that many knew nothing about the disease didn’t mean that some people didn’t know about it; Yes in fact, the Chinese knew a lot about this disease which they originated.

After further research, the virus responsible for the disease was code named the “2019 Novel Corona Virus” (COVID-19) because it belonged a group of severe acute respiratory syndrome.

Well, it has since caused a lot of havoc the world over, with major cities across the America’s and Europe recording high numbers of cases with a higher numbers of deaths.

The worst affected country as at 30th March 2020 according to worldometers.info is the World’s economic powerhouse United States of America with 156,818 cases and 2,871 death.

Italy comes in at second with 101,738 confirmed cases with 11,591 deaths.

Coming in at third position is 85,195 confirmed cases with 7,340 deaths.

Now, Ghana has had her fare share of the cases of the deadly viral disease which scientists are struggling to get a cure or vaccine. Ghana’s current count at the time of our report stands at 152 confirmed cases with 5 deaths and 2 recoveries.

As a matter of urgency to prevent community spread since most of the recorded cases were imported, the President of Ghana Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo ordered that all schools be closed and all social gatherings including churches be banned from Monday 16th of March 2020 for 4 weeks. This ban on social gatherings has really affected a lot of social events.

This post highlights three (3) of these events which Ghanaians were earnestly looking forward to grace before a hold was placed on everything.

3Music Awards

The 3Music Awards Scheme headed by CEO Sadiq Abdulai Abu is in it’s third year and the many Ghanaians were looking forward to attending the new and refreshing music awards event.

The nominees for this year’s event were announced on the 31st of January 2020 with the main event initially scheduled for Saturday March 28, 2020.

However, the rest is history as the event has been postponed in line with the President’s orders to suspend social event’s hosting more than 25 people for the next 4 weeks.

Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA)

Ghana’s flagship annual music awards event, the Ghana Music Awards with headline sponsors Vodafone has been suspended after the President’s declaration on the ban on social gatherings.

Before this ban, the VGMA’s was in a bit of danger after fans of Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy who form a large proportion of the music fanbase in Ghana boycotted the event and started a hashtag #VGMAisascam on Twitter to make the event unpopular.

The two top Ghanaian dancehall artistes are on an indefinite suspension in participating in the event after they caused mayhem on stage during the last event last year, almost resulting in fatality as one of the two artistes involved in the scuffle has a fire arm in hand.

Well, let’s wait for the coronavirus pandemic to be over to see how VGMA2020 will go as the nominees have already been announced.

Kwahu Easter

Each year during Easter, the place to go to is the mountain top, Kwahu bepo to be precise. That’s where all the fun and excitement takes place.

This is particularly because of the paragliding festival and other social events which include street carnivals and performances from A-list Ghanaian artistes.

Meanwhile, the Kwahu Traditional Council in a Press Statement has cancelled this year’s event as they are in full support of the President’s ban on social gatherings to help combat the spread of cornavirus in the country.
