Early Life & Education

Wardell Stephen Curry II was born on March 14, 1988, in Akron, Ohio, United States, to former NBA player Dell Curry and his wife Sonya Curry, a former Virginia Tech volleyball player.

The oldest child of their parents, Seth Curry, is a professional basketball player for the Dallas Mavericks. His other sibling, Sydel Curry, plays volleyball for Elon University.

Stephen Curry‘s father, Dell Curry, was a Cleveland Cavaliers player when he was born but later switched to the Charlotte Hornets in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he spent most of his formative years. Previously, his father would transport him and his brother to their siblings’ practice sessions.

The family briefly resided there after his father joined the Toronto Raptors team. During this period, Stephen Curry was in charge of the boys’ basketball team at Queensway Christian College, where he guided them to an undefeated season. The family moved back to Charlotte, and he enrolled at Charlotte Christian High School.

Due to his small stature, most coaches ignored him and decided not to recruit him. He was reluctant to enroll at Virginia Tech, where his father had gone to college, but Coach Seth Greenberg turned him down.

Stephen Curry eventually enrolled at Davidson College in November 2005 after being persuaded by a coach named Bob McKillop, who initially recognized his potential while seeing him play at the age of 10.

Career

After enrolling at Davidson CollegeStephen Curry played his first collegiate game versus Eastern Michigan. He only scored 15 points and committed 13 mistakes during the game, but he showed his worth by outscoring Michigan by 32 points. He was the second-highest scorer in the nation that season, averaging 21.5 points per game, earning him the title of Southern Conference Freshman of the Year.

His debut season of 122 three-pointers, which set a record, was followed by an even stronger performance in the 2007-2008 season. He aided Davidson Wildcats in extending their victory streak to 22 games and reaching NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1969. Stephen Curry became Davidson’s all-time highest scorer with 34 points in his junior season. He also topped his previous career-high 44 points against Oklahoma on November 18, 2008. That season, he significantly outpaced John Gerdy, the previous scoring leader, and replaced him as the NCAA scoring leader.

Stephen Curry left Davidson College before finishing his senior year to play in the NBA. The Golden State Warriors selected him with the seventh overall pick in the 2009 NBA Draft. As a kid, he set the record for the most three-pointers made by a rookie in league history with 166, demonstrating his shooting prowess right away.

However, recurring injuries and the fact that he played for a terrible team kept him out of the spotlight for the next two seasons. The 2012–2013 season saw him fully heal from his ankle sprain. Then, because of their combined record-breaking total of made three-pointers, he and his colleague Klay Thompson earned the moniker The Splash Brothers.

The next year, Stephen Curry participated in his first All-Star game for the West and later made his first All-NBA Team. Additionally, he developed into the Warriors’ best three-point shooter. He broke his league record for the most made in a season with 286 three-pointers during the 2014–15 campaign.

In 2015, he helped the Warriors win their first championship since 1975, and the NBA named him the Most Valuable Player of the year. Stephen Curry helped his team win 24 straight games the next season, leading to 73 victories overall, an NBA record. He guided the Warriors to their second straight NBA Finals despite being injured. However, despite his record-breaking 27 three-pointers in the final game, the Warriors could not win.

He continued to break records during the 2015–16 season, including his own, bringing the new record for the most made three-pointers to 402. Stephen Curry broke numerous three-point records and went over 300 threes for the second time in league history as he concluded the 2016–17 NBA season with 324 threes. By February 25, 2017, his team had been the NBA’s quickest to clinch a postseason spot.

He made his debut with the United States National Basketball team at the 2007 FIBA Under-19 World Championship, and the squad earned a silver medal. Later, in 2010, he helped his side win a Gold medal as a part of the senior squad. Stephen Curry‘s team also won the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup without losing a game.
