Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang is a Ghanaian academician and politician belonging to the National Democratic Congress (NDC). She is a Professor of Literature and the first female Vice-Chancellor in Ghana.

Education

Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang studied at Anglican Girls’ SHS, Aburi Presby Girls’ and then Wesley Girls High School in Cape Coast from 1964 to 1971.

She obtained a B. Ed (Hons) in English and French in 1977 from the University of Cape Coast. Naana Opoku Agyemang also holds a Diploma in Advanced Studies in French from the University of Dakar. She also obtained a Masters and Doctorate degrees from York University in Toronto, Canada in 1980 and 1986 respectively.

Career

Jane Naana began her illustrious career in 1986 as a lecturer in the University of Cape Coast. Whiles in UCC as a lecturer, she held several positions like; Head of the Department of English, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Warden of Adehye Hall, Valco Trust Fund Post-Graduate Hostel, and the Founding Dean of School of Graduate Studies and Research.

She became the Academic Director of the School for International Training in the History and Cultures of the African Diaspora in 1997. She made history when she became the First Female Vice Chancellor in UCC from 2008 to 2012.
In 2018, Prof. Naana Opoku Agyemang became the Chancellor of the Women’s University in Africa.

She has served on Centre for Democratic Governance, (CDD-Ghana), the Editorial Board of the Harriet Tubman Series on the African Diaspora (Africa World Press Inc. USA), among other top local and international boards and committees.

Prof. Naana is also an author who focuses on literature. She has written and published in several scholarly journals. In 2015, she published and launched a five volumes collection of published folktales titled “Who told the most incredible story?”

Former President John Dramani Mahama appointed her to become the Minister of Education in Ghana from 2013 to 2017. Her party lost the 2016 elections hence had to exit her role in 2016.
In an attempt to regain power from the NPP, former President John Mahama selected her in 2020 as his running mate. Unfortunately, they lost the elections by about 500,000 votes.

Family

She is married with three children. They are Dr. Kweku Opoku-Agyemang, Dr. Kwabena Opoku-Agyemang and Dr. Maame Adwoa Opoku-Agyemang.
