A huge explosion occurred on January 20, 2022, at Apeatse between Bogoso and Bawdie in the Western Region, leaving an unconfirmed number of persons dead.
The fire which caused the explosion was started from the sparks of a motor bike which got caught under a tanker belonging to Maxam, which was transporting explosives via the route where the incident occurred.
According to eye witnesses, the motor bike was attempting to overtake the truck, and ended up underneath the truck. It was pulled along and the sparks generated, causing the tanker which was transporting explosives to catch fire.

Due to the severe nature of the explosion the highway road split into two, no vehicle can move so quickly the works department had to mobilize equipments to create alternative routes. Thanks to the hardworking engineers Patrick Nartey and S.K. Fianoo and your prayers .
A joint team of officers from the Ghana Police service, Fire service the national ambulance service and NADMO were at the scene to access the situation.
Due to the severity of the explosion, the road split into two, causing vehicular traffic on that stretch. A joint team of engineers from the Ghana Highway authority and Municipal assembly are quickly working to get alternative routes to ease vehicular traffic.
