Modrić was born on September 9, 1985 in Zadar, Croatia. He is the son of Radojka and Stipe Modrić. He grew up throughout the war, His family was forced to leave their home hamlet in 1991 when the fighting became more violent. Modrić was primarily raised in the stone home of his paternal grandpa, after whom he was named.
