Argentine footballer, Lionel Messi has won his seventh Ballon d’Or, beating second-placed Robert Lewandowski to the award.

Messi, 34, was the favourite ahead of the event after ending his wait for an international trophy in 2021, winning the Copa America with Argentina.

He also finished finished last season as the La Liga top goalscorer and scored a brace in the Copa del Rey final for Barcelona. 

Bayern Munich striker Lewandowski, 33, who came in second was top candidate for last year’s Ballon d’Or award which did not come on due to the Corona virus pandemic. 

Messi adds this to the previous awards he won from 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015 and 2019.

He has extended his lead as the record holder for what is considered the most prestigious individual prize in football.

His closest contender, Cristiano Ronaldo is now two behind him with five titles, whilst legends Michel Platini, Johan Cruyff and Marco van Basten have four titles.
