Jailed Former MP Abuga Pele Granted Presidential Pardon By Nana Addo Over Deteriorating Health


The President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has granted a presidential pardon to Mr. Abuga Pele, the former National Coordinator of the defunct Ghana Youth Employment and Entrepreneurial Development Agency (GYEEDA).

The former MP for the Chiana/Paga constituency was last month hospitalised after he was taken ill in a critical condition at the High Dependency Unit (HDU) of the hospital.

Abuga Pele and Chief Executive of Goodwill International Group (GIG), Philip Akpeena Assibit were indicted because of their role in alleged fraudulent activities at GYEEDA.

Abuga Pele and Philip Assibit were charged with 19 counts including dishonestly causing financial loss to the state. The prosecution however m proved 13 of the 19 counts Abuga Pele faced ranging from aiding and abetting crime to willfully causing financial loss to the state. Some others included intentionally misapplying public property and dishonestly causing loss to public property.

Meanwhile, Philip Akpeena Assibit was found guilty of 6 of the 19 counts including defrauding by false pretense.

The court case which began in 2014 saw Assibit being accused of putting in a false claim for payments to the tune of 3.3million cedis as services provided to then NYEP.

Pele allegedly entered into the agreement with Assibit and prevailed upon the state to make payments when there was no prove of work done.
