The much anticipated music video for Black Sherif’s viral song “Kwaku the Traveller” was released on YouTube today 19th May, 2022; and we must confess, the video carries with it some weight and deep concepts.
The audio for “Kwaku the Traveller” has been doing so well on online music streaming platforms the world over; and it set the tone for the anticipation with which the music video was also received.
The 3:32 minutes music video which was directed by David Nicol-Sey was produced in the form of a movie, depicting various stages in the life of the Ghanaian musician, Black Sherif.
The music video began with a scene where Black Sherif in suit stood in front of a group of journalists who kept bombarding him with questions, accusations and allegations. He tried explaining himself until he could take it no more; he picked his luggage and left the scene abruptly.
- Concept of the Press Conference scene: Black Sherif leaves the press conference after being overwhelmed by everyone’s opinion. He rather decided to ignore the negativity and move on.
The next scene shows Black Sherif walk towards four women all wearing red outfits in a hall. These women gather around Black Sherif and pray for him, releasing some favor and blessings over his life.
- Concept of the mothers’ praying scene: After ignoring all the criticisms and public opinions, he then visits a group of spiritual mothers who shower him with their blessings as he journeys on. This is only a symbolism of a mother’s love and well wish for their children.
The next scene shows Black Sherif in a tea party with a lot to eat and drink. In this scene, Black Sherif does not struggle to fit in as he joins the partiers to have some fun.
- Concept of the tea party scene: This scene which showed an opulent Black Sherif having a tea party with other females only goes to illustrate that Black Sherif is able to fit in any environment regardless of gender and status.
The next scene showed five guys in black attire and pink bags fighting each other in a scene of complete confusion. They are supposed to be Black Sherif’s haters who keep finding fault at any move he makes. But yet still, they can’t concentrate on that task as they are confused; and rather fighting each other.
- Concept of the fighting followers with pink bags: These minions represent Black Sherif’s haters and the state of confusion these haters exhibit amongst themselves while still keeping their eyes on the artiste they claim to hate.
The next scene showed Black Sherif and some cronies committing a crime for which they were arrested and interrogated by the police. The scene shows Black Sherif and his cronies standing up to the team of investigators who were bent on making sure that they ended up behind bars.
- Concept of the interrogation characters: The industry gatekeepers try so hard to find faults against Black Sherif and would go any length to bring him down. But they keep trying in vain.
The next scene shows Black Sherif leading a group of young, free spirited and highly self-motivated youth on the streets. They move without restriction and are bent on arriving at their destination.
- Concept of the group of youth in silver outfits: Black Sherif is the leader of the new generation of kids who do not conform and surrender to the old generation, regardless of gender, class or race. He is leading the rebellion.
The next scene shows Black Sherif running on a tread mill in the center of a basketball court whilst a lady in a white gown like that of a wedding dress stands at one corner of the court watching him.
- Concept of the lady in gown: She’s Black Sherif’s guardian angel who is always looking out for him wherever her goes and in whatever he does.
Wow; without the explanation to this concept, I guess you would have been damn lost about scenes in the whole movie right?
The music video has received massive reaction from fans of Black Sherif, especially Ghanaians on Twitter with many applauding him for the dexterity and concept with which the movie-like music video was produced.
These concepts were derived from the award winning film director and cinematographer who directed the music video, David Nicol-Sey from a conversation he had with an entertainment pundit.
