HBO has officially announced that Aaron Pierre, known for his role in Netflix’s “Rebel Ridge,” will take on the role of John Stewart in the upcoming series “Lanterns.” This marks a major moment for the DC Universe on  television, as it brings one of the most iconic Green Lanterns to life in what promises to be a gritty, “True Detective“-inspired exploration of justice and mystery set in America’s heartland.

Lanterns,” part of James Gunn‘s newly curated DC Universe, follows intergalactic police officers John Stewart and Hal Jordan, played by Kyle Chandler. The series delves into a dark, Earth-based narrative where the two Lanterns investigate a murder, weaving in-depth and societal relevance themes.

Aaron Pierre, who has gained recognition for his performances in “The Underground Railroad” and “Old,” steps into the role of John Stewart, a character known for his military background and moral complexity. Stewart‘s unique journey, having been thrust into the role of a Green Lantern rather than chosen, sets him apart, making him well-suited for the gritty, nuanced story the series is expected to tell.

James Gunn, co-head of DC Studios, expressed his excitement about Pierre’s casting, saying, “Thrilled to welcome Aaron Pierre into the DCU as John Stewart. His portrayal will bring new depth to what it means to be a Green Lantern.” Gunn‘s involvement ensures that “Lanterns” will offer superhero action, rich character development, and exploration of real-world issues.

With its tone and storytelling already drawing comparisons to “True Detective,” the series aims to redefine the superhero genre on television by focusing on character-driven drama alongside cosmic powers. Pierre‘s John Stewart, teamed with Chandler‘s Hal Jordan, will tackle mysteries that delve into the human condition, all while wielding the immense power of a Green Lantern ring.

Produced in partnership with Warner Bros.  Television and DC Studios, “Lanterns” promises a blend of the fantastical Green Lantern mythos with grounded storytelling, further expanding DC’s narrative universe under Gunn‘s visionary leadership.
